Ricky Sbragia has called upon his Sunderland side to be more clinical in front of goal as they look to drag themselves to Premier League safety.

The Black Cats have nine games in which to stave off the threat of relegation, having slipped into trouble as a result of their indifferent form of late.

They have taken just two wins from their last 11 games and have scored only eight goals during that sequence - with half of those coming from strike pairing Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse.

Sbragia admits the lack of firepower is giving him cause for concern, but believes his players are creating enough opportunities to rectify the problem sooner rather than later.

He said: "We create them, we are just not clinical enough and ruthless enough.

"Andy Reid has maybe got one, and we could do with one of the full-backs getting one, but we are not a prolific goalscoring team and we have to address that.

"We do enough shooting and finishing and movement in training every day, so it is a case of putting that into practice on the pitch.

"We just have to hope the situation comes. If we create them, I don't have a problem. It's when we don't create them.

"But in general, we have got to be more ruthless when we get the chance."

Sbragia, whose side currently sit on 32 points, believes 41 points will be enough to secure a top flight standing this season and is keen to reach that target as quickly as possible.

"I hope it doesn't go until the last game of the season, but it won't be far off it," he said in regards to the delicately poised relegation battle.

"It is so close, it is so tight - the majority of them have got to play each other as well."
